Inter are away at Juventus this weekend – read our preview!
We’re approaching the weekend, and we’ve got a big game in Italy to look forward to as Inter travel to Turin for a tricky away match against Juventus. Let’s take a closer look at the upcoming fixture!
We are past the halfway mark in the 2024/25 Serie A season and things could not be more exciting at the top of the table. Just 13 points separate the top of the table from sixth place – which is the final European qualification spot. Those positions are currently occupied by Napoli, Inter, Atalanta, Lazio, Juventus, and Fiorentina respectively. This weekend, two title rivals in Juventus and Inter go head-to-head in the Derby d’Italia. Let’s take a look at all the latest team news, predictions, and odds for Juventus vs Inter at the Allianz Stadium.
Allianz Stadium – Sunday 16 February. Kick-off: 20:45 local time.
The Allianz Stadium is one of the newest grounds in Italian football, having opened in September 2011. It can hold just over 41,500 supporters and is currently home to Juventus. The Old Lady are such an iconic team that their ground is sometimes referred to simply as Lo Stadium – which translates to The Stadium. The last time Juventus hosted Inter in the Serie A, it ended 1-1. In the last five fixtures at this stadium, Juventus had won three and drawn one, with Inter winning the remaining match. However, this season, Inter arguably come into the match as favourites.
Let’s take a look at the form of Juventus and Internazionale heading into the second Derby d’Italia of the 2024/25 season.
Juventus
Juventus have won three of their last five matches heading into the Derby d’Italia this weekend but remain 11 points behind their rivals and 12 points behind Napoli in the race for the Serie A title. Although their recent CL form has been mixed and they did suffer a 2-1 domestic defeat to Napoli, the Old Lady have picked up recent wins against AC Milan, Empoli, and Como. Unfortunately, for Juve, they must contend with a CL knockout play-off fixture against PSV this week while Inter have nothing but rest.
Internazionale
The pressure was on Inter last week as they took on Fiorentina on Monday evening, days after their rivals had picked up points in the race for the Scudetto. Simone Inzaghi’s men got the job done though, with Marko Arnautovic scoring the winner off the bench after replacing the injured Marcus Thuram. Inter remain just one point behind Napoli at the summit of the Serie A table and have a chance to take points off a direct rival in Juventus this weekend. Much like Juve, Inter have three wins, one draw, and one defeat from their last five league fixtures. This includes wins over Fiorentina, Lecce, and Empoli, as well as an away draw to AC Milan.
Juventus:
The Old Lady have a few more walking wounded than their rivals heading into the weekend. Gleison Bremer remains out with a cruciate ligament tear which he picked up back in October. He is not expected back until early April at the earliest. Juan Cabal has also had to undergo cruciate ligament surgery, which will keep the left-back out until late May. Andrea Cambiaso has an ankle problem but could make his return to the squad this weekend, while Pierre Kalulu is also in contention to return from his muscle injury.
Internazionale:
Inter enter the Derby d’Italia with a relatively clean bill of health. Raffaele Di Gennaro remains out with a finger injury but is expected to return later this month. Yann Sommer remains the Inter number one either way, so it isn’t a huge miss for the team. However, Simone Inzaghi will no doubt be worried about the status of star striker Marcus Thuram heading into a crucial part of the season. The Frenchman asked to be taken off in the 28th minute against Fiorentina after struggling with a muscle injury. Thuram has been in red-hot form for Inter so far this season, scoring 13 and assisting 7 in the Serie A alone. Federico Dimarco has also struggled with an illness this week and is touch-and-go for the weekend.
As always, the most interesting battle between Inter and Juventus is often strikers vs centre-backs. This time, we have a new forward to look at in Randal Kolo Muani. The on-loan PSG striker has already netted five goals in his first three games for Juve, and he will now come up against the stern challenge of Pavard, Acerbi, and Bastoni. It will be interesting to see whether the solidity and physicality of that back three can drown out the sheer pace and dynamism of Muani. At the other end of the pitch, Lautaro Martinez may have a different striker partner for the day if Marcus Thuram is unable to take part. Marko Arnautovic comes into the Derby off the back of a match-winning goal last week but will come up against the daunting task of scoring past Renato Veiga and Federico Gatti this time out. With this fixture often won by a single goal margin, those battles could be key in deciding who leaves the Allianz Stadium with all three points.
Since the very first Derby d’Italia back in 1909, Juventus and Inter have gone head-to-head on a total of 239 occasions. In that time, Juve have walked away with 109 victories, with Inter managing just 70. The remaining 60 ended in draws. This includes the crazy end-to-end 4-4 match at the San Siro earlier this season! In the past 115 years, the Old Lady have managed to score 350 goals past Inter, while Internazionale have hit back with 292 of their own. The last six meetings between these two sides in all competitions have either ended in a draw or been won 1-0, showing just how closely matched they have been over recent years. In the last 10 Serie A Derby d’Italia meetings, there have been 26 goals, making for an average of 2.6 per game. In that time, Juventus have won four matches compared to Inter’s three.
Juventus would like to believe that they still have a chance of competing for the Serie A title this season. The unfortunate truth for the Old Lady is that they currently languish in fifth and remain 12 points behind the league leaders. For them to have a real chance of lifting another Scudetto, they would have to have a near-perfect second half of the season – a tall order even for Juventus. Inter, on the other hand, will fancy their chances of making it back-to-back Serie A title wins this season. No one has claimed two consecutive titles since Juventus in 2020. However, Napoli remain one point ahead of Inzaghi and Co so it looks like it could go right down to the wire. Even if Juventus are resigned to missing out on the title itself, they still have a fight on their hands to finish in the CL qualification spots, with Fiorentina and AC Milan nipping at their heels.
Let’s take a look at how we expect Juventus and Inter to line up for the Derby d’Italia this weekend.
Juventus Starting XI
Di Gregorio; Savona, Kelly, Gatti, Weah; Koopmeiners, Locatelli; Yildiz, McKennie, Gonzalez; Kolo Muani.
Internazionale Starting XI
Sommer; Pavard, Acerbi, Bastoni; Darmian, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Augusto; Arnautovic, Martinez.
Internazionale go into the Derby d’Italia as slight favourites despite being the away side. Inter are currently 11 points above Juventus in the table, while the Old Lady have a mid-week CL fixture to contend with. However, with these two sides playing out a 4-4 earlier in the season, anything could happen at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday.
Internazionale to win: 2.22
Draw: 3.25
Juventus to win: 3.35
Last season, this fixture ended in a 1-1 draw. You can get odds of 6.00 for that to happen again. If you think Juventus could fight back and make up some ground on their rivals this weekend, you can get an Old Lady 1-0 win at 9.50, a 2-0 win at 17.00 or a 2-1 win at 11.00. Everything points towards an Inter win this weekend – albeit a narrow one. Although both sides are in good form, Inter are challenging for the title and Juventus are only pushing for CL qualification. Juve’s mid-week CL fixture against PSV is likely to take a lot of energy out of them, while Inter have a full week of rest to prepare for the Derby d’Italia. That’s why we are going for a narrow Inter win, with goals coming from Marko Arnautovic and Lautaro Martinez.
Prediction: Juventus 1-2 Internazionale
